Each chapter focuses on a fundamental of painting

Chapter 1:
Introduction

Sketching in watercolor is fun, relaxing and rewarding. We can use simple materials and it’s easy to do most anywhere, anytime! You just can’t be bored if you’ve got you’re sketchbook on hand, plus you’ll be observing and recording life in a brand new way. It’s a great way to spend your time! So let’s get started on this creative journey!
  • Guided Learning: Tools and Materials
    Sketchbooks
    Watercolor Sets
    Your Space, Any Space
    Work Habits
    Resistance
    Basic Techniques
  • Videos: Sketchbook Walkthrough
    Basic Techniques Video

Chapter 2:
A Bit About Color

All color is relative to its neighbor. It’s good to
think of building color relationships. You can’t
really understand a color’s impact unless you
look at the colors that surround it. A color is
only bright and vibrant in relation to something
more neutral. Compare and contrast colors.
Experiment with how colors look when placed
next to colors that are darker, lighter, duller or
brighter. The more you experiment, the more
sensitive you become.

  • Guided Learning: Color Wheel
    Making Your Own Color Wheel
  • Step by Step Demo: Making your Own Color Wheel Video

Chapter 3:
Sketching the Landscape

Watercolors are delightful for painting the landscape. To achieve the effect of aerial perspective, add progressively more water to the paint to lighten the value and intensity of shapes as they recede towards the horizon. Use basic techniques to capture trees, shrubs, flowers and sky.
  • Guided Learning: Sketching the Landscape
  • Step by Step Demo: Colorado Landscape

Chapter 4:
Sketching a Still Life

A still life can be just about any object or grouping of objects. They can be related, like the garden tools or something that catches your eye on your kitchen counter. Try organizing a group of your favorite things, or empty out your purse and sketch the contents! Once you start seeing things as shape and form, everything is visually exciting.
  • Guided Learning: Sketching a Still Life
  • Step by Step Demo: Teacup

Chapter 5:
An Urban Scene

Don’t shy away from architecture and people. Try to see everything as shapes in relation to each other. For scenes with people, draw in the first figure to establish eye level and scale, then knit the other elements in relative to the people. Keep their heads smaller than you think!
  • Guided Learning: Doing Urban Scenes
  • Step by Step Demo: Florence

Chapter 6:
What to Sketch

Everything, everything, everything! If we look closely at our everyday lives, we’ll find an abundance of inspiration right there. You should paint and draw anything that entices you. If you do that, you’ll be endlessly entertained, never bored and you will gain skills quickly. I’m a huge fan of the “plop yourself down and paint what is in front of you” method!
  • Guided Learning: Sketching Ideas
  • Step by Step Demo: Chucks

Chapter 7:
How a Page Takes Shape

Sometimes diagramming or laying out your pages can help you to convey ideas and create a cohesive style to your sketchbooks. This can be just as creative as drawing and painting the actual objects and scenes. Choose what you want to include on the page and try several arrangements.
  • Guided Learning: Laying out and Diagramming
  • Step by Step Demo: Ginger Jar and the Figurine

Chapter 8:
Conclusion

I hope after taking this workshop, you’ve caught the sketching bug like I have and that you find it as challenging, rewarding, relaxing and plain old fun as I have! Keep going. Draw and paint everything. Soon, your skill and enjoyment will soar.
