Course Contents

Each chapter focuses on a Study or a Step By Step Demo

Chapter 1:
Introduction

Together, we’re going to dive into the breathtaking world of nature, from sweeping mountain vistas to the quiet, intimate charm of a reflective pond. There will be plenty of “aha” moments as we explore the magic of light, color, and atmosphere. And along the way, we’ll uncover how to infuse your own sense of wonder into every painting you create.

Chapter 2:
Sky

The answer to “how do you paint a sky?” lies not in following strict formulas or methods, but in observation – the more you observe, the more you can translate that vision into paint.

Chapter 3:
Trees

Trees possess universal qualities that provide consistent visual elements an artist can rely on when capturing the essence of trees in the landscape.

Chapter 4:
Water

Always bear in mind that when looking at water, you’re still seeing and painting shapes, value, and color. Look at the water objectively and paint what you see, not what you think water should look like.

Chapter 5:
Albuquerque Sky

We’ll focus on capturing the dramatic gesture of cloud forms and the vibrant energy of the sky, contrasted with the subdued, neutral tones of the urban foreground, using bold, sweeping stokes to convey the atmospheric drama of shifting light and clouds.

Chapter 6:
Black Butte

We’ll focus on capturing the delicate quality of light trickling through a forest canopy, illuminating a hidden pathway. The play of dappled light and shadow creates a magical atmosphere, drawing attention to the vibrant greens of the forest vegetation and the warm hues of the sunlit path.

Chapter 7:
A Gentle Green

This scene offers an excellent opportunity to practice aerial perspective, highlighting the transition from the bright and inviting foreground to the hazy, distant hills through the subtle adjustment of color saturation and value to convey the depth and atmosphere of the scene

Chapter 8:
Meadow Path

The golden fields provide an opportunity to practice layered blending techniques and expressive mark-marking that express the sunlit textures of grasses moving in the wind.

Chapter 9:
Oregon Road

By the end of the lesson, you’ll have a strong understanding of light and shadow patterns and how to use value as a foundation for a compelling composition.

Chapter 10:
Winter Fantasy

We’ll explore the striking contrast of winter’s subdued neutrals with the vibrant remnants of fall color, celebrating the transition of seasons with and interplay of muted whites, grays, and soft greens, with warm, saturated, autumnal hues.

Chapter 11:
Wallowa Lake

The hazy atmosphere offers an excellent opportunity to experiment with muted tones, capturing the effect of sunlight diffused through the summer heat

Chapter 12:
Taos Alley

This lesson emphasizes finding beauty in the ordinary, encouraging students to focus on light, reflection, and the power of unexpected color relationships.

Chapter 13:
15 Minute Challenge

This lesson incorporates a time limit to encourage decisiveness and a break from overthinking, challenging students to work swiftly and intuitively, using my reference as well as choosing your own.

Chapter 14:
Wrapping up

A common theme throughout this workshop is the importance of observation. The best thing you can do is train yourself to see the world around you with an artist’s eye. Study nature to understand its forms, textures, and how light interacts with each element.

What people say?

I was both stimulated and excited at the prospect of taking on a totally new medium. I adored the class work and the interaction with other students. I hope to take another class soon and I feel I have learned a great deal in”mark making” and with a new medium upon which to play. Thanks, Marla!
