Course Contents

Each chapter focuses on a Study or a Step By Step Demo

Chapter 1:
Introduction

We’ll take a journey into the realm of great draftsmen before us to help us to see through our artists’ eyes. I hope you’ll find that your “eyes are in love” as much as I do! Why do we draw and why does it seem so hard? What’s the difference between drawing and sketching? How can we get oriented for success? We’ll tackle these questions right away in this chapter.

Chapter 2:
Materials

One of the joys of drawing is it’s simplicity. If you have some paper and a writing instrument, you’re ready to draw! We are going to keep things simple in this workshop and ease into a variety of pencil and paper choices. It’s amazing what can be achieved with just paper and graphite. I’ve taken a lot of time to get to know my tools and become familiar with them, so my intent is to give you a little head start and point you in some directions that will speed your path to your own recipes of materials.

Chapter 3:
Warming Up

Warming up before you start to draw in earnest is always a great idea! We are going to kick off our study with some play time. Then we’ll do some more organized exploration of what our tools can achieve. Studying the basic shapes without the influences of texture and color gives us a chance to see how light affects the forms. Study the form principle and then practice the basic shapes on white with blending and again on toned paper using layering and hatching.

Chapter 4:
Light and Shadow

Translating what we see into value will lend form, volume and texture and make your drawings more realistic. Studying the predictable way light falls on objects or the Form Principle will guide our work in this chapter.

Chapter 5:
Shapes Not Things

One of the secrets to drawing is seeing everything in the visual field as a shape not a thing. We don’t need to know the “what” of anything to be able to draw it. In fact, it’s not at all helpful! This chapter will give you plenty of practice in shifting to a “shape, not thing” orientation. We’ll start with simple household objects, then see how complicated objects can actually be easier. We’ll do a classic “Drawing on the Right Side of Your Brain” exercise, then practice seeing subjects as silhouettes.

Chapter 6:
Construction Methods

The progression of a drawing from initial stages to finished rendering can be accomplished in a variety of ways. The construction method is usually not obvious or visible in a finished drawing; it’s been erased or obscured by the rendering of the finished piece. We will explore several ways of constructing your drawings, giving you a sound strategy with which to approach each and every thing you draw! We’ll study contour and cross contour, scribble, spiral, tracing, tonal, grid and measuring and finally Planar Analysis.

Chapter 7:
Rendering Methods

Often, you’ll want to bring a drawing to a more finished state beyond a sketch or study. It’s helpful to concentrate on a few techniques. Eventually you’ll be able to combine them for a more spontaneous and free approach. Sometimes a subject will dictate how a drawing should be completed. During this chapter we will explore just some of the possibilities. I’ll cover, uniform outline, accented outline, sketchy outline, shading with line, shading by blending and using a toned ground. I also touch on line quality and three methods of transferring your drawings.

Chapter 8:
Drawing Nature

Finding wonder in the natural world around us is one of the true joys of being an artist. Even the simplest of moments and the humblest of flowers is a source of enchantment for the observant and open-minded artist. Sketching and drawing nature can be as intricate or simple as you want to make it. Your work can be for the sheer pleasure of it or used for research or study. In any case let yourself delight in the simple coordination of hand and eye. Don’t be daunted by the complexity in the visual field! We’ll do two projects; first a sculptural and textured tree stump, and an urban garden with a lovely mix of foliage, flowers and trees.

Chapter 9:
Drawing Animals

Not only are our four-legged friends dear to us, but they are also beautiful and fascinating! With some practice we can depict their fluffy fur, the details of their sparkling eyes and even their gesture and movement.

Chapter 10:
Still Life

till life gives us an opportunity to work from direct observation and lets us have great of control over subject, composition, eye level and lighting. Although still life can be very traditional, you can also be very creative and innovative with unique juxtapositions of objects and interesting placements. Before we start, we’ll practice ellipses which are all around us but especially common in the still life. Then as our final project, we’ll spend time to bring a traditional still life to a rendered finish with a combination of our rendering methods.

Chapter 11:
Afterword

At the end of the workshop, give yourself a pat on the back, but get right into your own pieces. Keep a sketchbook! Draw every day if you can. I suggest selecting some subjects that are very similar to ones we did, so you have an entry into them. But draw everything and anything. Goodbye for now!

What people say?

I am loving the Drawing and Sketching class. The course materials are all easy to access and use. Best of all I can go at my own pace. When life gets too busy work on my drawing, I can stop for a while and come back to where I was or repeat earlier lessons if I want a refresher. The FaceBook group is really supportive and even if I’m not working on the course at present, they inspire me to get back to it. I would highly recommend this course to others as I feel drawing is a foundational skill that will improve all my other artwork.
