Course Contents

Each chapter focuses on a fundamental of painting

Chapter 1:
Introduction

This workshop is designed for anyone who is engaged with color! First, we hit the very basics and unpack them. Then we look at mixing and the best way to see and analyze color. I recommend the mixing practices even for pastelists so you might need to get some paint! Next is a deep dive into each aspect of color followed up with powerful exercises to give you vital practice with each concept. Then I’ll help you learn to orchestrate color as we look at established color schemes. These are a jumping off point to more unstructured and adventurous play with color in our final project.

Chapter 2:
Getting Started

I’ve outlined several simple options for materials and encourage keeping it simple. We wil be working with Acrylic paint and optionally, Pastels for this course, but the principles apply to all mediums.  We will start with simple exercises, move to more complex ones, then culminate in a final project where you’ll apply everything you’ve learned.

Chapter 3:
Color Basics

We start with a little vocabulary, simple definitions and examples to illustrate the key factors about color. There are three aspects responsible for a colors appearance; value, hue and saturation.

Chapter 4:
Mixing

The skill of matching color that you see is crucial for any artist whether you are a painter, pastelist or even graphic designer. If color is in your life, you need to know how to mix it! You can get very good at it with a little practice and a solid process. This chapter takes you through the steps to become proficient at mixing any color.

Chapter 5:
Working with Aspects of Color

No matter your level of experience as an artist, you might be struggling with teasing out the difference between value, hue and saturation in your work. This is one of the hardest things to grasp as a painter. It’s hard to see a color’s value independent of its brightness. It’s easy to associate lightness in value with brightness but they are not the same thing. Here we take a closer look at each aspect of color. Understanding the independence and interdependence of the three aspects of every color is the key to your color competence.

Chapter 6:
Carlson's Theory of Angles

See it simply, Paint it simply. Well, it’s not that simple is it? It’s been said that every good picture is fundamentally an arrangement of three or four masses, a design of masses of differing sizes and values. Color gets the glory but value does the work! The key to this theory is that the elements in a painting that an artist must deal with have different values not because of any color they may have but because they present different angles to the light that falls on them from the sky.

Chapter 7:
The Impressionists + Optical Mixing

The impressionists were innovators whose
techniques still have a powerful influence
on painters to this day. Optical mixing or
the The Bezold Effect when two or more
colors are perceived simultaneously they
are seen as combined and thus merged
into a new color. The original colors are
made invisible and a new color, the optical mixture, replaces it.

Chapter 8:
Limited Palettes

Limiting your palette is a very good way to promote more harmony in your paintings. That’s why there is much “to do” about color schemes, color masking or gamut masking, historical palettes used by famous artists, ect, ect. There are lots of ways to go about limiting your palette. I believe the best way for beginners is to very simply limit the number of colors you use. If you keep your palette of colors small, all the colors will naturally share a relationship. In this chapter we explore several ways to limit your palette with the goal of promoting a more harmonious result!

Chapter 9:
Putting It All Together

Once we have some tools at our disposal we can begin to push the limits of those tools and use them in more expressive ways. We can orchestrate and be playful with our application of color. I’m constantly pushing the boundaries of my palette and asking myself “what if?” This is where we can build a bridge between our knowledge and our emotions. We can use flashy and sultry hues. We can use color in a realistic or symbolic fashion. We can push color and even invent it. This is where the magic happens!

Chapter 10:
Afterword

What’s next? There’s plenty more to explore! Going beyond structured color, surfaces application, color interaction, working from color studies, lessons from master colorists and much, much more. Color is such a beautiful and mysterious part of painting that never ceases to surprise and fascinate me. I hope you’ll join me next time as we continue the journey into color together! I’ve included a variety of resources that I think are amazing! I’ve also put together an illustrated glossary of terms that is both beautiful and useful.
