In mid 2020,  decided to focus on portraits. I was motivated by my students – they were interested in portraiture but I didn’t feel confident enough to tackle them at the time. So, I started studying artists who mastered the human head, like Andrew Loomis and John Singer Sargent. I began by copying their illustrations, then moved on to sketches from  my reference photos. Eventually, I started doing “paintings” in Procreate, a digital art program. I would paint almost every day, and Procreate let me record my process so I could see what was working and what wasn’t. Through this process of study and experimentation, I was able to develop my own style and approach to portraiture. It’s been an amazing journey, and I believe it proves that study, mileage, and inspiration are key to achieving your goals as a painter!
