Sunsets have captured the imagination of artists for centuries. They’re emblematic of romance and put the astonishing beauty of nature on full display. They offer us the perfect opportunity for honing our painting skills. With sunsets, we get to really learn about light and color while rekindling our inner sense of awe and whimsy.

Pastels give us bold, beautiful color at our fingertips so sunsets are the perfect subject for pastels. This workshop will provide you with a strong grasp of techniques that will make painting your favorite sunsets in pastel a joy! During this online workshop with over 7 hours of video and a 40-page illustrated study guide, we’ll follow the cycles of nature and give expression to emotions and feelings while respecting the principles we need to create works of art.

Course Contents

Each chapter focuses on a fundamental of painting or Demo

Chapter 1:
Introduction

During this workshop we’ll be turning up the volume on “WOW”! We’ll be busting out our most vibrant and saturated sticks of pastel, dipping into corners that we usually don’t dare to go! What fun! Let your-self be in awe of those breathtaking sunsets. Keep your fascination high and your frustration low!

Chapter 2:
Study

A bit of study will be helpful in creating more
convincing paintings that combine realism and a
personal artistic vision. John F. Carlson described
aerial perspective as the third dimension; the
primary means of creating a sense of space in an
otherwise two dimensional plane. Applying a bit
of knowledge of aerial perspective, some study of
how light scatters, how reflections behave and how clouds are structured all lend
authenticity to a painting.

Chapter 3:
High Desert Glow

We start with a little vocabulary, simple definitions and examples to illustrate the key factors about color. There are three aspects responsible for a colors appearance; value, hue and saturation.

Chapter 4:
Summer Sunset

It’s easy to get the sky too dark and turn the clouds to mud if you don’t know how to go about layering your pastels. This lesson demonstrates the proven steps on how to knit the sky and clouds together to create a luminous and atmospheric pastel painting of clouds!

Chapter 5:
Evening Reflections

This peaceful and beautiful scene is a simple composition yet has quite a bit of complexity for the artist to delve into. The sky has beautiful subtle shifts of color and value. The edge of the lake with the shimmering lights and little structures are challenging but will add an element of humanity and nostalgia. The reflections will play a leading role in this scene, so depicting them simply and accuratey will strengthen the overall impression.

Chapter 6:
Purple Twilight

This glowing, tranquil scene relies on the soft gradations and the subtle value shifts in the low end of the value scale. I chose to edit out the foreground grass to maintain a simple, quiet feel to the entire scene. Preselect some color and test them out before you attempt the gradation.

Chapter 7:
Ocean Glow

This is what I think of in my minds eye when I think “sunset”! It’s both serene and awe inspiring. I tend to shy away from painting these types of scenes because my impression is that they are already so beautiful, there may be nothing for me to do! But since I’m always up for a challenge, we are going to tackle this gorgeous photo that my friend Roger Thompson Photography has provided for us

Chapter 8:
Coastal Sunset

Creating drama and mood in the landscape is very much a part of what motivates us to paint, but capturing these fleeting moments that we experience can be a big challenge. What’s more, they can come across as trite and amateurish if we’re not careful. In this lesson we will tackle a moody panoramic sunset.

Chapter 9:
Milky Way

Once we have some tools at our disposal we can begin to push the limits of those tools and use them in more expressive ways.  I’m constantly pushing the boundaries of my palette and asking myself “what if?” This is where we can build a bridge between our knowledge and our emotions. We can use flashy and sultry hues. We can use color in a realistic or symbolic fashion. We can push color and even invent it.

Chapter 10:
Afterword

What’s next? There’s plenty more to explore! Going beyond structured color, surfaces application, color interaction, working from color studies, lessons from master colorists and much, much more. Color is such a beautiful and mysterious part of painting that never ceases to surprise and fascinate me. I hope you’ll join me next time as we continue the journey into color together! I’ve included a variety of resources that I think are amazing! I’ve also put together an illustrated glossary of terms that is both beautiful and useful.
