Introducing Mighty Miniatures

An Online Mini-Workshop
with Marla Baggetta

Whether you’re brand new to art or an experienced painter looking to reignite your creativity, this mini workshop invites you to discover the surprising power of working small. From quick value thumbnails to pastel color studies, acrylic miniatures to jewel-like watercolor master copies, these tiny formats offer endless opportunities to experiment, play, and build real creative momentum. As I worked through these exercises myself, I was reminded of something essential—that art doesn’t require a big canvas or hours of uninterrupted time. Some of my most exciting discoveries happened in just a few minutes on a 2-inch square. Join me, and I promise, you’ll find yourself always making something—and building a library of ideas that will fuel your art for years to come.

Course Contents

Each chapter focuses on a Study or a Step By Step Demo

Chapter 1:
Thumbnails

Before color enters the picture, there’s shape and value—the skeleton of every great composition. In this chapter, you’ll create nine quick thumbnail sketches using pen, pencil, and markers on toned paper. These small studies train your eye to see the essential structure that makes a painting work.

Chapter 2:
Color Tidbits

Which colors should lead? Which should support? In these nine abstract pastel studies, you’ll explore color hierarchy, temperature, and mood—without the pressure of rendering a subject. It’s pure play with powerful lessons.

Chapter 3:
Acrylic Miniatures

Finally paint those subjects you’ve been wanting to try—birds, clouds, florals, still lifes—on tiny 2.5×3.5″ clayboard tiles. Working small means low stakes and fast feedback, so you can experiment freely and build confidence with every piece.

Chapter 4:
Mighty Monet

Copy the masters—not to replicate their brushstrokes, but to understand how they captured light and atmosphere. In this chapter, you’ll create nine small watercolor studies inspired by Monet, learning to see color relationships and atmospheric effects through his eyes.

Chapter 5:
Wrapping Up

We’ll tie everything together and explore how these four exercises feed into your larger creative practice. Your 36 miniatures aren’t just finished pieces—they’re a library of ideas, compositions, and color schemes ready to inspire future paintings.

What people say?

I was both stimulated and excited at the prospect of taking on a totally new medium. I adored the class work and the interaction with other students. I hope to take another class soon and I feel I have learned a great deal in”mark making” and with a new medium upon which to play. Thanks, Marla!

I have been so impressed with your online painting lessons. You put so much work into presenting the concepts clearly with your teaching, examples, and demos. There is so much content on your site and I’m still scratching the surface of your offerings but I feel that every exercise you suggest helps me grow in depth and breadth. Thank you for your commitment (and perfectionism) to giving us the best learning experience.
