We’re thrilled to announce “Breaking Free: From Sketch to Frame,” a three-day workshop retreat with Tony Allain. This engaging event will be hosted by the Painting Lessons with Marla Team. Offered within Milwaukie Oregon’s Masonic Lodge, this workshop offers a unique learning opportunity that you will not want to miss! 

In the three days of the workshop, we will cover a lot of subjects, from landscape, marine subjects, reflections and the mood and atmosphere of the world around us.

Workshop Schedule

Day 1:

Start your journey by diving into Tony’s complete painting process from first mark to final stroke. You’ll work through the essential decision-making that happens before the painting even begins, then execute a full piece from start to finish. Challenge yourself with limited palette exercises that teach you to mix rich, harmonious colors, and discover what you’re truly capable of when painting against the clock. By the end of day one, you’ll have experienced Tony’s entire approach and completed your first piece with confidence.

Day 2:

Push beyond your comfort zone as Tony guides you through looser, more painterly techniques. Working with dramatic contre-jour (backlighting) and atmospheric landscape or seascape subjects, you’ll learn to capture mood and light with confidence and freedom. This is where the magic happens—Tony will challenge you to be bolder and  decisive with your values, and more expressive with your mark-making. Expect to surprise yourself with what you can do when you let go.

Day 3:

Bring it all together. Spend the day working on your own piece while Tony provides individual critique and guidance. This is your opportunity to apply everything you’ve learned, work through challenges with Tony’s expert eye, and complete a painting worthy of framing. Whether you’re refining a piece from earlier in the workshop or starting fresh with newfound confidence, you’ll leave with a finished work that shows real growth.

Don’t worry about the supplies needed for the workshop. We’ll be sending out an email with a comprehensive list of all the supplies you’ll need. Please keep an eye on your inbox so you’ll be fully prepared for the workshop.

Given the intimate nature of this workshop, limited to only 20 students, our refund policy is as follows: We are able to process refunds up until the end of January. This allows us to ensure that every spot is filled and that the workshop can run smoothly. After this date, we are unable to provide refunds due to the costs associated with planning and securing resources for the event. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation with this policy.

If you need assistance finding accommodation or deciding where to eat during your stay, please contact our support team. We’re more than happy to provide local recommendations to suit your needs.

We have a daily lunch break during the workshop and suggest packing a meal for convenience. However, if you prefer to purchase your lunch, we can also recommend local eateries where you could grab a quick bite. Feel free to reach out to us for more details.
