111- Watercolor Sketching Tools

Combining watercolor with a variety of pens and pencils can produce a fabulous range of effects that are both expressive and satisfying! I love using both pencil and pen with watercolor, but you do have to be a bit careful to make sure you use the media in the right order, so you don’t wind up ruining a delicate watercolor or losing the perfect pen line. Order of operations count here!

During this video, I demonstrate how I combine some of my favorite drawing tools with watercolor to achieve the best results. I love a simple mechanical pencil as well as the Cretacolor Monolith when I want a light more nuanced line to combine with the painting. I love the Lamy pens, but have to make sure I don’t wet the line if I want my sketch to remain fresh. Lamy pens have water-soluble ink which for an Urban Sketch might be just the thing to mix with watercolor, but not for a bright floral!
